Health Promoting Schools
The aim of health promoting schools is to enhance and support health related programmes in the public schools in the Seychelles targeting the health sector, schools, communities and parents.
The HPS Project
The Ministry of Education in partnership with the Health sector aims to establish a model for Health Promoting Schools (HPS) for Seychelles. The exercise will be piloted through the adoption of internationally recognized approaches, based on best practices and health promotion principles. |
Principles of HPS
There is increasing research that support the view that health and educational outcomes are linked and that the well-being of children and young people is directly influenced by the school, community and family in which they live. |
Health Concerns
Concerns related to adolescents include early sexual involvement leading to teenage pregnancies and abortion, increased risk of exposure to sexually transmitted infections, substance abuse, eating disorders, mental health problems, sexual abuse, emotional or physical abuse... |
The Change Process
Health promotion often aims at changing the school culture and can take 2-5 years. Successful programmes are likely to foster positive relationships between schools and health workers making it easier for future health promotion work. |
